In 1970, Shinkong Synthetic Fibers' first factory building was completed. In 2020, Shinkong welcomed its fiftieth year. Though the half-century has weathered several global raw material, political, and economic impacts, the company has stood firm. Much like "At forty, one is free from perplexities; at fifty, one knows the decrees of Heaven," as stated in the Analects of Confucius (Weizheng chapter), Shinkong perseveres to this day. Facing its 50th year, Shinkong has set a broader vision for the next century, based on the principle of knowing oneself and one's rivals.

In 2020, Phoebe Shen served as the art director for Shinkong Synthetic Fibers' 50th-anniversary series of events, using art as a communication medium to initiate a dialogue with the future and the enterprise. She invited Lu Chao-Hung, who has dedicated his life to weaving, and Chuang Hui-Lin, who is adept at using industrial products to manifest human consciousness, to join the project. They utilized "PET recycled yarn" produced by Shinkong as the creative medium, and Chuang Hui-Lin was invited to reside at the Shinkong Pingzhen factory.

Chuang Hui-Lin's work, Look! The Hexagons Dancing in the Air Leap into a Rainbow Across the Sky!, uses the hexagon—the chemical structure of PET (polyethylene terephthalate)—as its modular shape. These 51 PET hexagonal structures radiate outwards, symbolizing industrial energy, and pay tribute to Shinkong Synthetic Fibers' 50th anniversary. In the past, Chuang Hui-Lin primarily created independently. In response to this project, she formalized her workflow into steps for the first time. During workshops held while she was artist-in-residence, she guided company employees in a collective creation process, crystallizing the wisdom of the group, embodying Shinkong’s core philosophy, and visualizing Aristotle’s famous saying, "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts."

Lu Chao-Hung's work, Circumnavigation of the Realm; Meeting is Reunion, focuses on the primary creative medium: "PET recycled yarn." The process involves collecting recycled plastic bottles, sorting, cleaning, and de-labeling them, then crushing and drying them into flakes. These flakes are reformed into pellets (chips) and spun into yarn. Through this entire process, PET is given a new life. The artist meditates on this journey of "once again" and weaves new cycles of life, attempting to flip people's perception of PET—the "evil" of plastic bottles was born from human single-use habits, but the material's non-degradable nature, when placed in a creative context, transforms into a material advantage.

Shinkong Synthetic Fibers, using materials it produces in-house, has crafted a birthday gift for itself, sincerely wishing to step toward the next milestone with every member of the Shinkong family.
